About us

Compen Embedded is an early-stage startup headquartered at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, providing cutting-edge technological solutions to medical device startups driving neuroscience innovation across Europe and the United States. Our mission is to help them overcome firmware challenges and fast-track the delivery of life-changing breakthroughs.

The role

Depending on your experience and interests, you'll work as a hands-on engineer and technical advisor in client projects, or on the firmware foundations of our own medical-device technologies. Either way, you'll work in environments where reliability and regulatory compliance are non-negotiable, and your work directly influences the safety and performance of next-generation medical technologies.

This is an on-site role. To be considered, applicants must currently reside in the Netherlands and hold valid work authorization.

You'll be doing things like

  • Architect, design and implement real-time firmware for medical devices in modern C++
  • Apply medical device standards such as ISO 13485, IEC 62304 and ISO 14971 throughout development
  • Define and carry out verification and validation, including unit tests, integration tests and traceability
  • Diagnose and resolve complex firmware issues in a structured, reproducible way
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams, including hardware, systems engineering, neuroscience and quality assurance
  • Help shape the engineering processes, documentation standards and long-term technical direction of Compen Embedded

You might be a great fit if you…

  • Care deeply about patient outcomes and doing things the right way, even when nobody's watching
  • Hold a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree in Computer Science
  • Bring solid experience in embedded development, ideally in regulated or safety-critical environments
  • Have deep familiarity with microcontrollers, low-power design, real-time constraints and hardware-software integration
  • Can read and reason about circuit diagrams across both digital and analog domains
  • Communicate clearly, build trust quickly and enjoy working in a team that values ownership
  • Thrive in a Unix CLI environment, with tools like Neovim, tmux and Docker
  • Bonus: experience with FDA/CE requirements, startups or connected medical devices
